Framed within this greater narrative, ‘a book in passings’ tells the story of an obscure and nameless youth wandering across Europe, from Barcelona to Athens. As he hitchhikes, walks and sweeps across the land aboard trains, his travel sketch is washed into a stream of consciousness, a stream of observation and emotion, and into a narrative of encounters with the self. Gradually becoming disillusioned with his purpose—and purposelessness—his story grows into a final reckoning between the words which are written and the human life from which they spring.

‘a book in passings’ is the third publication by Hearts

This is the first novel-length work by Timu Raubenheimer. It is an autofiction based off the travel sketch he wrote while hitchhiking and walking across Europe. Produced here, Hearts has designed the book into a thin-cover paperback, deliberately making it vulnerable to tearing and damage. This design has been chosen to make the book into a sensitive object, one which uniquely adapts to the readers journey with it. If it is carried in a bag it will bend. If it’s taken on a road trip it will likely come out the other side stained with dirt and missing the front page.
